The BVI Ports Authority on Thursday afternoon disclosed that the renovations to the Cruise Ship Pier and construction of the new tender dock have been completed.

To this end, there will be an official opening ceremony on Tuesday, 5th October, 2010.

Last year, Government signed two separate contracts for the construction of a new tender dock and works to improve the existing cruise ship pier. The contract for the tender dock was $3.4M and $1.5M for the existing cruise ship pier.

According to Government, the tender dock is being built in the immediate vicinity of the cruise pier. This dock will be used as the reception area for tenders from cruise ships at anchor, and will also be used by ferries taking passengers on tours to other Islands.

"This will reduce congestion, particularly the foot traffic at the Road Town Jetty and its perimeter. All cruise passengers using the Tender Dock will be channeled through the same courtesies extended by the BVI Tourist Board at our reception facilities," the BVI Ports Authority stated.

Furthermore, renovations to the Cruise Pier included the resurfacing of the entire pier and installation of state of the art fenders. Additionally, landscaping and construction of a fence were done to enhance the aesthetics of the compound.

The cruise ship dock which was built in 1994, had its first extension in 1999 mainly due to the fact that bigger ships were coming on stream.
