We're taking a cruise to the Southern Caribbean this summer. I was just wondering if anyone here has ever been there. Any recommendations for shopping, beaches, tours, etc.? I'm looking forward to going and I don't want to miss out on anything. I think some of our ports of call are Aruba, Dominica (I heard wasn't too good), San Juan (we depart from here), and a few other which I can't remember. Thanks for any thoughts.
(That smiley looks a bit mean but I used it anyway.)
Well it looks like I'll be one of the first from this board to cruise down there. I'll tell you all about it when I get back (4 months from now ). Maybe I'll even post while I'm on the cruise...
You will really enjoy Dominica if you take a tour of the island. We toured with Reyno Tours and for $30.00 we had an excellent day and seen almost the whole island. Its a poor island, but what they lack in monetary they sure make up for in fiendliness. Wonderful people live on the islands and it is home of some of the most awesome scenery. I think you will enjoy it. I know we did. Great place to pick up hand made soaps and real Vanilla.

I'd love to take a tour of Dominica but my parents have heard bad things about it and they're not interested. Maybe I'll talk some of our friends into going and I'll hitch a ride with them.

I do love the friendly people. That makes it so enjoyable. That is one of the fondest memories my wife and I have when we travelled to Belize, the people were so kind and we got to tak school supplies to a school in a village of 400 people - it was great!

DW... Are you sure we're on the same page? Are your parents possibly talking about the Dominican Republic? If so, I can understand how they formulated their opinion. I've been to the Dominican Republic and the Island of Dominica, twice and there's no comparison. The island of Dominica is likened to Bali-Hai in the movie South Pacific.. It is outrageous.. Even my wife, agreed that she could be very happy living there.. Dominica, not to be confused with the Dominican Republic, is absolute Paradise.... Bombero

Well now I'm confused. All I remember is how they kept saying that people told them that Dominica/Dominican Republic is just a big rain forest. Whichever one that is, that's what they're talking about.
Yes, they have lots of rain forest there, but it is so much more too. They have tour operators right at the pier, I am really encouraging you to go on one of their tours. You will not regret it. It is a beautiful island. It is quite mountainous and the waterfalls and pools are breathtaking. You have just gotta do this island of Dominica, it is not however the Dominican Republic. People do get them mixed up.
