Thanks for all the great information!! I would love to travel there some time!!
Are there many itineraries that include Trinidad?
I recall HAL visited there in 1999, but don't recall them offering any present itineraries with it as a port.
When I went back in March, 2006, I saw the Sea Princess and a Swan Hellenic cruise ship in port there. Just checked HAL's website, they do not call in Trinidad. Princess does.
Hal went there for at least 3-4 years straight but it hasn't been on any itineraries for a while. I have been there 3 times, the last time being in 2001. I liked this port.
First time we got a taxi and did a tour. It was good.
Next trip I went to the Caronia bird santcuary. It is a very long ride. It is ok if you are into birds.
The third trip I went to the monastary. I did Hal's tour. I was not pleased with this. We were rushed through. I would take a taxi if I went back.
Just got back from Trinidad last Saturday, Oct. 20th, and went to Maracas Bay, Tyrico Bay & Las Cuevas Bay beaches. Maracas Bay was closed due to high tides and strong currents. Red flags were all along the beach. Here are some pictures of Maracas Bay.
Too bad the beaches were closed this trip. Was it also rainy ... or just windy?
We enjoyed Maracus Beach and have been lucky (weather wise) the times we have been there. ( Our visits were always in January.)
LuLu ... Visit SOUTH CAROLINA!

LuLu, the currents were very strong, not too windy. The rains were west of the Bay, so it was dry at the beaches. Maracas Bay is very noted for strong, dangerous currents and undertow. When I lived there, it was common to be disappointed if you wanted to bathe there. We'd have to drive about 2 miles east to Las Cuevas Bay.

Wonderful pictures, Ken!
Trinidad is one of those places I would sure like to see someday. Between your comments & pictures, and the stories our friend Curtis tells, it really puts your country on my must see list. Hope I get there one day!

You need to go to Trinidad, Sheila (canarymoon). Ken may correct me ... but it's not a place to snorkel which is important to you.....
Trinidad is so GREEN and beautiful!

I DO love to snorkel... but I LOVE green, too!
I think the poor, brown leafless, lifeless-looking trees you see up north in the winter are incredibly depressing to look at. Makes me sad.

You're correct LuLu. However, if you fly over to the sister-island of Tobago, there's a reef called, Buccoo Reef offshore Tobago. It's a great place to snorkel. You'll see coral reefs and many species of fish.
To get the boat to take you to the reef, it's a short walk from the Crown Point Airport. You'll be taken to the reef and the Nylon Pool, a shallow section of water where you can see the sea floor very clearly, hence the name, "nylon pool". You can jump out the boat and wade in the water there.
