Red face Shopping St. Thomas, St. Maarten, Cococay

I am tired of shops set up to take advantage of tourist by making them think they are getting a deal or something special. A friend gave me a dress she purchased at a straw market in the Bahamas. The label said made in Indonesia or some such place. I went to the biggest silver store in Cozumel and noticed that most of the deals were "seconds" or not top quality making them only a deal to the untrained eye.

Are there any items that are special to St. Thomas or St. Maarten that I shoud think about buying? An example would be Kalua from Mexico.

    Are there any good deals?

I heard someone mention jewlery in St. Thomas. What kind of jewlery and what store? i.e. diamonds, silver charms, costume jewlery, ?

Any help would be greatly appreciated since I am leaving in one week.

    Thanks!!!

I prefer the prices in St. Martin!! Beware of the international stores touted by the cruiselines, they get kickbacks!! Know what you are bying, like silver I only buy the 925. Gold, by weight, For Really expensive stuff, I buy here at home, if there is a problem I can return through a person.
Some people try to turn back their odometers. Not me! I want people to know why I look this way. I've traveled a long way, and some of the roads weren't paved.

ooooooh Guavaberry margarita. Yum. YES BUY THAT!

Hey gang - does that old rule still apply to the guavaberry liquor? When AllieMan and I went to St. Martin for our honeymoon (12 years ago) the rule was that since the guavaberry liqour was a "handicraft" it didn't count to the 1ltr limit for US customs? Has that changed?

The duty free allowance from St Thomas is 5 ltrs per person.
You are allowed a 6th ltr. if is produced in the Caribbean.
That would include most Rum, Southern Comfort and Guavaberry.

The problem now is that you can not carry it on a airplane for the trip home...
