We took an amazing excursion on this island. And what a fascinating island Lanzarote is. It's very volcanic and arid with hardly any rainfall. Over 100 volcanoes ave erupted here. We rode camels and had a bus tour into Timanfaya National Park which is a volcanic field with a variety of geological phenomena and a large mix of plant species. In the park we visited Fire Mountain which was the center of an eruption that took place in the early 1700s and lasted 6 years. The ground temperature here is 140 C just 4 feet down and we saw a demonstration of how hot it is. After that, we visited the Salt Flats of Janubio and the Vineyards of La Geria.
I'm not sure how anyone lives on this inhospitable island. The island only has an average rainfall of 5.5 inches per year and the only plants are succulents. They have managed to grow grapes which get their moisture from the dew that forms at night. (The wine isn't very good). There are no trees and all the houses are white. The colored shutters and doors seem to be the only color on the island.
