Sydney, Nova Scotia

Unfortunately, I don't have too much information about Sydney, Nova Scotia.

When I was in Sydney last year the pier area was underconstruction. The city itself is a short 2-3 block walk from the pier. However, being a small city there wasn't all that much to see in the city itself. Most of the shore excursions offered here provided visitors a chance to go outside of the city.

I can tell you that when I went to Sydney we visited the Fortress of Louisbourg right outside of town. This is a Fortress with historical importance in Canada and its one of Canada's most ambitious projects to commerate its past. The Fortress is located in a strategic location and at different points in its history it has been controlled by the British and the French.

The Canadian government has poured millions of dollars into the project to reconstruct as much of the Fortress as possible based upon drawings that they have discovered as well as existing foundations that were found. Even after years of working on the project, it is only about halfway completed.

I will attach some pictures

We just booked the QM2 for October 2006 which stops in Sydney. Did you go on any of the side trips? Did you notice if there are cabs that wait near the dock as they do in the Caribbean?

Sydney is a really small town. The town itself doesn't have much to do in it. I don't specifically recall their being cabs.

In fact in most of the Can/NE stops we made, I don't particularly recall there being cabs waiting.

In Sydney, I took an excursion to the Fortress of Louisbourg. It was interesting.

I recommend you do something in this city. If you stay in the city, there's just not much there.

I heard that the excursion out to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Lunenberg (sp?) is really nice, but kind of expensive.

Were you on the QM2 when you went to Sydney? We are booked on an October sailing and wondered if anyone had comments about the ship.

You might want to do that if the ship stops in Halifax. It's half a day's drive from Sydney.

Thw first time we were here we did a general tour just to get know the port.

The next time we were here we did the Bras d'or Lakes Grand Tour. It is an all day tour but I highly recommend it. Stops included a Nova Scotia Highland Village, the village of Baddeck (we had lunch here included in tour) - home of Alexander Graham Bell, stopped at his museum, and of course drove around the Bras d'or Lakes - beautiful country.
