I am copying all the post about Newport that I am posting on the Eurodam roll call to here. I thought that way others might want some of the info I have provided Cher and Lulu.

Home - Newport Mansions

Ok gals. Here is the site for the mansions in Newport. The cliffwalk runs behind the mansions. I will post you some pictures of the mansions later. They are on my cd.

Newport is a tender port. It says you will be here from 7 am to 4 pm. I can pick you up and be your tour guide for the day.

If you decide you want to go to a mansion then it is easier then with the tours. I have a season pass and I think it will be still good for the month of Sept. I will check on that. If so I get to go to the front where they have a line for members. Also, the people with me get to get in the house first too. The house prices are all the same except for the Breakers. I think it is 2 per person more. It is also the biggest house. I can tell you more about most of the houses later. I can take more pictures for you of things around Newport just let me know what you want to see.

Also for the mansions if you want to do three houses you can do it for less then each individual. They have a three and five house package. I wouldn't suggest more then three houses on a day. Two houses are really easy to get in.

As far as the Cliff walk you might not want to walk all of it. If you have your cell phones with you (which I am sure you will) I will drop you at the start and then drive to different intervals to meet up with you.

Ft Adams is interesting. I haven't toured it but have done the musuem there. Brenton point is cool to take a drive around. You will see it when you are coming into the harbor.

As far as where you want lunch I can check on the different places you are interested in. If it is just a panini sandwich I have just the place. If you want to eat in the old Seaman's church it is and interesting place.

I can also get you onto the Navy base if you are interested in seeing the museum by the war college.

The picture I am posting is taken from the military base looking at the Newport Pell Bridge.

This is the side of the house too.

Sorry if I am skipping around a little I will go back to the Breakers for one more shot when I find it on the computer.

This picture is of the Naval War College. The museum is just to the right of the picture.

This is the P&O Aurora in port. It is close to Ft Adams. I have seen them a little closer to the bridge too. It isn't far though. I could kayak from one place to the other.

This is the front of the Breakers. The front door is at my back.

This is the back of the Breakers. btw this time of year that you will be here the carriage house and the childrens play house will probable be closed. There is a chance they could be open. If so the Childrens play house (with working kitchen) is on the property. The carriage house is a couple of blocks away.

On some of the mansions I will give you a little more info. The Elms is another one that is pretty grand. This one isn't on the water. It is on Bellevue Ave though. When they built the house they didn't put in a lot of guest rooms. Instead they had three houses built to house their guest. They also had an enclosed gazebo type thing. Besides that they had a patio area in back with a full kitchen and another area where they could have balls. We did the rooftop tour of the Elms. It is really ineresting what you learn. It is separate from the tour of the house. The tour of the house is a self guided house because it is one of the two with headsets. You can listen to extras about this house by pushing in the numbers offered for that room.

The view of the water from the rooftop is of the harbor where you will be entering. The garden area is sunken and can't be seen from the house. When you look at the house you don't see the windows upstairs. That is where the servant's quarter's are. They really are pretty nice as far as that goes. They also had a really really big basin thing to hold the rainwater. And an elaborate way to distribute it throughout the house. They also made their own ice at the house. The sold it to some of their neighbors.

When the house was sold to the preservation society it was done so because the taxes were so enormous. (more then any of our houses are worth)

I will post this then the pictures.

The Elms lower garden area.

Looking up at the gazebo from the lower garden area.

The fountain is right above the gardens. The statues are closer to the house. There are a bunch that I don't have pictures of right now.

The tree is the large one you see from the roof.

The Beakers was owned by Cornelius Vanderbilt. He had his winter home on a block on 5th ave in NYC. One of the dept stores now is housed on that block. Vanderbilt inherited from his father being the oldest. They also had the railroad. One of his grandchildren was Gloria Vanderbilt.

The next house that I am going to be showing you some pictures of is the Marble house. It was the brother to Cornelius that had it built for his wife. It was a gift to her. Inside there is one room that is inlaid entirely in gilded gold. She later divorced her husband and remarried another. The one she remarried had a house down the block. She kept Marble house kindof like a glorified closet.

The Marble house has a chinese tea house. Originally when the tea house was built it was below near the water level. It couldn't be viewed from the house. Later it was raised up higher. The cliff walk walks right under the tea house.

The marble house is made of several different colors and types of marble. It was imported from all over the country to Newport.

In fact the art on the ceiling of the Mrs Vanderbilts room was brought from overseas and put on the ceiling. The cherubs on the four corners didn't fit so they cut them out and added the in their own section on the four corners.

Mrs Vanderbilt was a bit ahead of her time in things like women's rights and all. She did a lot of the things associated with that time period towards that area. This is the front of the house.

Next is shots of the back and then of the side.

These were taken right in front of the chinese tea house. If you look off in the distance above the trees at the largest house roofline that is the Breakers.

This is Chateau-sur-Mer. It is undergoing renovations right now. This house is smaller then the first three I have mentioned. It has had renovations in the past past and additions added to it.

I will have to search other cds. This is all the mansions on this one. I have had a lot of guest and taken different pictures and forgotten to take some at times.

Salve Regina University

Salve Regina University is a private university. It is housed in many of the old mansions. You will see the grounds of the university as you walk or drive around Newport Bellevue area.

Sorry if I mentioned some of this info a second time. I didn't want to leave anything out from what I had put in here before and since I was adding it to a roll call thread I thought it best to add to here too.
