20. Newport, RI: Mansions and more High Society, the Grace Kelly/Frank Sinatra/Bing Crosby classic, is all about Newport, especially the title song, sung by ‘Satchmo’. Kelly stayed at the Inn at Castle Hill during filming. At Rosecliff, one of the city’s opulent mansions, you can see the ballroom where Arnold Schwarzenegger danced the tango in True Lies (1994) and where the state dinner was held in Amistad (1997). Stephen Spielberg also used the Old Colony House on Washington Square for the Amistad courtroom scenes. Other movies set in this swish town that hosts an international film festival each summer include The Great Gatsby (1974).
There have been some current ones there too. In fact there is one that isn't out yet with Kathryn Heigel.
The original Rosecliff was of wood. It was smaller and rebuilt way back when. The center room is the ballroom. You can see it is set back from the two sides of the house. The ballroom is 40 ft high by 30 ft wide and 80 ft long. It is amazing. The french doors are both on the front and back of the house to open it up to more space.
This is the middle of November so the flowers aren't full bloom. In fact most of everything is dying out. The fountains are all drained. The rose is the American Beauty Rose. Gerge Bancroft was an amateur horticulturist and he was the one who developed this rose.
