New homeport calls highlight Halifax season
Today’s arrival of Holland America Line’s Maasdam ushered in the May to November cruise season at the Port of Halifax.
Seasonal highlights include four visits by Queen Mary 2 and the first turn-around calls by Hapag-Lloyd’s Hanseatic for an itinerary that will circumnavigate Newfoundland, visiting St. Bride’s, Norris Point, L’Anse aux Meadows, St. John’s and Twillingate.
‘We are pleased to be the first ship of the season here in Halifax,’ said Rick Meadows, svp marketing and sales for Holland America. ‘With all the wonderful attractions, beautiful scenery and the friendly people, Halifax continues to be one of the premier ports of call on our Canada/New England itinerary as it has been for the last 16 years.’
The capital of Nova Scotia will again welcome close to 185,000 passengers, according to Cathy McGrail, manager of marketing and cruise development for the Halifax Port Authority. Expected spending by passengers and crew in the local community is estimated at CAN$23m (US$21m).
