    Los Angeles Weather

I'm starting the official weather thread for Los Angeles and the environs. Please feel free to post any info you have. If you're planning on traveling to Southern California, please post when and where (besides your departure port of San Pedro, Long Beach or San Diego, let us know where you're staying and what places you're planning to tour) and the Angelenos here will try to help let you know about the weather conditions.

On the 11am newscast, one local station had a Port of Long Beach shot, which showed a lot of fog. I can barely see the Carnival Paradise's whale fins. Couldn't really see the QM.

It apparently is raining right now in Santa Barbara and expected to hit Los Angeles in the early hours of the morning. Should continue throughout the day until midnight Tuesday.

Long Beach may get up to be 60 degrees. Cooler more inland (like near me).

Winds are kicking up here currently. Today, the temps were in the 50s and low 60s but will go up in the next few days to the 70s. The Valley will have overnight lows in the 30s, downtown LA and the OC will see lows in the 40s.

As for San Pedro, now through Saturday, expect highs in the low 60s, warming up to the low 70s by Sunday. Lows in the 50s Sunny during the day with clear nights.

It looks like great football weather for Saturday, Dec. 2 at the Rose Bowl. About 75 degrees (go Bruins!).

For the next few days, it'll be clear skies for San Pedro. Highs in the 70s and lows in the 40s.

Patty, this is a great idea for a thread. For people who want to plan ahead, what can we expect? I know about June gloom, and I've heard of Santa Ana's. When are they common? Is there a rainy season?

Since LA is BIG, what differences should we expect from, say, the Valley to the piers?

    Great questions, Mindy.

Our rainy season tends to fall during the late fall thru late winter/early spring. So far we just had one night of rainy weather. This year, there's supposed to be a mild El Nino so we can expect a lot of rain.

During the winter time, San Pedro (where most of the cruise ships -- aside from Carnival -- depart from LA) may see from 1 to 4 inches of rain per month. Mountainous areas such as Big Bear will see more precipation (and even snow) -- over 4 and a half inches per month during the winter. The area I live in is in the foothills of the Santa Susanas so we can get up to 4 or more inches per month during the rainy season.

When it does rain, it can be falling all day long for a few days. As this is a semi-arid area, the drainage is not the best so expect some flooding, especially in intersections. There are flood plains, such as the Sepulveda Dam basin in Encino, which are to be avoided during rainstorms.
