Joey ~ Ocean Drive will be my next search, thanks! I want to start spoiling myself right away, even before I'm onboard so I can get into a vacation state of mind.
I'll let you know what I come up with and get your opinion.
You're in better hands now...I didn't think much of the options in San Pedro, but they were adequate, clean, and close. (Is that damning praise, or what!) I stayed in Long Beach years ago at one the big hotels- Westin? Hyatt? and had a view of the Queen Mary from my hotel room, all lit up at night. Wonderful!

It's over.....too soon
This has been really useful. I was automatically going to book a hotel in this area for a few days before and after a cruise. I think I will check in elsewhere.

After much research on the internet I have booked Best Western Los Angeles Worldport Hotel in Wilmington. It is about 6 1/2 miles from the terminal. The hotel is rated AAA-2 diamonds and seems to be in an ok area. If anyone knows any different, please let me know. Thank you for your help!!
If you ask for a top floor room facing the cruiseport you can actually see the ship.

Finally gone on my cruise!
On the water everything is clear. It is a gift for the soul; a clarity born of sea and salt air that touches the small inner voice within us that has been too long silenced by the chaos of life. It is a gift that heals; that gives us power to rid ourselves of confusion, worry, guilt, and regret; that gives us faith in ourselves and our dreams. ~ Valerie Wilcox
The former Sheraton in San Pedro is now The Crowne Plaza. I did an inspection several weeks ago and it was a very nice property. In the heart of downtown and very close to the Maritime Museum and Port's 'O Call village, where you can find many places to eat and shop. A pretty touristy area though but right on the water and a pleasant place to spend some time. If you have a little extra time stop by the Fire Department fire boat station. I have heard that if not busy they will give you a touer of the station and maybe even one of the boats.
The DoubleTree is at the marina and quite a ways from both the pier and anything else for that matter. It is a very nice property though and they do provide shuttles to the downtown area and also Port's 'O Call.
The Best Western Sunrise Inn is closest to the cruise terminal, but a minimum bare bones property. It looked nice enough but didn't have the services provided at the other properties. The price was only slightly cheaper and IMHO not the better value.

I know this is an old post and I probably didn't see it before but just in case someone is checking out the LA area for a hotel:
Wilmington is an industrial area. It's probably more suited if you are there for business in that exact area. Same thing for the communities around there such as Carson, El Segundo, Compton, Hawthorne...
Airport hotels are fine if you're getting in late at night and will be going straight to one of the port cities the next morning or have an early flight the next morning. Make sure the hotel has a restaurant or room service staying open late then. You don't want to spend $ on taxis just to grab something to eat.
Avoid downtown LA as not being really conducive to playing tourist. More a place to stay if you're going to business meetings there or attending a convention at the convention center.
Try Santa Monica, Long Beach, San Pedro first as areas to stay before a cruise.
And don't forget, if you get a really low price, it may be because the hotel is a dump or in an undesirable area.

Thanks for the great review of the Crowne Plaza. My family and I are staying there before our cruise in April. Is this close enough to get a cab to the Royal Palm Beach to see the tide pools? Would that be a good place for us to experience the ocean? We are from Wisconsin and our teenagers have never seen a rocky shore with tide pools.
If you think we would be better off just staying in the tourist area around the hotel, let me know that too. We will have most of the day there. Our flight comes in at 10:30 and our cruise is the next day. Maybe we will take a nap before we head out to explore.

One thing to know about the Pacific Ocean is that the water will be pretty cold for much of the year (yes, I know about Wisconsin -- a former college roomie lives in Madison, and keeps me up on the weather). But beach weather doesn't happen until July. It may even be slightly overcast in the morning. So it's probably just as well that you're coming in the morning.
But it's best to pin down where you what to go that day, as Los Angeles and the environs is very widespread. Are you renting a car? Taking a tour? Just going to the hotel you mentioned (never heard of it)? Is it a beach?

Patty, Reggie mentioned this about the Crowne Plaza in a previous post:
