Help! Might need to move to another cabin.

I am sailing on the Conquest on the 19th of this month. Don't ask me why, but I just looked at the deck plans and noticed that we're directly below the galley! Can anyone tell me if we're going to hear a lot of noise through the night?(I am a light sleeper) We usually bring a small fan to drown out noises, will this be enough? Also, with only 29 days left.....will we have to pay more to select another cabin? I've never been in this situation before, so advise is very much welcomed!
    Thanks!

I'm guessing you meant to say you're sailing the 19th of next month, but you still have time to make changes.

This is why it's so important to book with a reputable cruise specialist. They have been on the ships, will look at the deck plan, and advise you what's above you, below you, across the hall from you, how close you are to the elevator, etc. If the person you booked this with did not advise you of these things, then they were more interested in getting your money than providing good service. They really should have provided this information to you.

Okay, with that said, we've been below a galley before and yes, you could very easily hear noise from above. Nothing like having a big pot hitting the floor at 4:00am to give you a jolt! I won't say we heard alot of noise, but we did hear it on a regular basis. Good thing is, most kitchen workers wear soft-sole shoes, so we didn't hear people walking like we did when we were below the Lido Deck. But occasionally we did hear plates & glasses breaking.

As for moving to another cabin, talk to your agent. They can move you to another cabin within the same category at no charge irregardless as to what you paid or the current rate, provided there are still some available. They will also be able to look at prices and availability to best advise you on other cabins in other categories if none are available in your category.

    Good luck!

Sorry, yes....we leave on February 19th. And I booked directly through Carnival and got so lost in the moment that I didn't even ask what was above us. We have another family traveling with us so we need to be very close to each other, preferably next door like we are now. I'll go on the website and see what's available.
Thank you very much, I suppose I won't book cruises directly through Carnival anymore. lol

Yep, booking directly through the cruise line is always a bad idea. They are looking after themselves, not you. An agent will get the same price and sometimes even better. An agent has your best interest in mind as they want you to use them again and recommend them to your family and friends.

CLIA (the Cruise Lines International Association) that we all belong to, put out an article that said more than 95% of the time when you call the cruise line or an online site, you're talking to someone who works in a call center, has worked for the company for less than 6 months, and has never even seen a ship, let alone been on a cruise or to any of the ports. So they basically cannot answer any of your questions - they are just there to take your money.

Hopefully, you'll find something that works well for you.

    Cabin plans

Before i book a cruise i always go onto a couple of deck plan sites which show what is below and above various cabins. A couple rate cabins very well, similar to airline seat sites, highlighting which ones to avoid. I always pick a cabin on a floor with only passenger cabins on the floors above and below.

My husband and i endured a nightmare cruise directly underneath a dance/live entertainment/demonstration area ...that convinced us to never be under or above an entertainment area! Being a light sleeper who also takes a small fan i understand your concern and hopefully you have been able to move somewhere quieter.

We are off on a 33 night cruise shortly and got an extremely good price but when i found out it was a guaranteed cabin, and saw where they had placed us (directly under pool/pool bar/main inside entertainment lounge) i paid more to choose a quieter cabin. This has made the cruise nowhere near as cheap but the thought of 33 nights in the original cabin was too much of a negative,

It is a real pain to be a light sleeper!

We've done guarantee cabins on many cruises and often we get good cabins, but other times, not so good. We once spent 2 weeks below the Lido Deck and I couldn't believe the noise we heard from above us! I measured it to see exactly what was up there and found a wooden floor by the pool. There was a sign that said, "Ladies in high heels, please stop and tap dance here!" Another sign said, "Kids, please run in this area!"

Only kidding! But there were times I wanted to take a shotgun up there and go skeet shooting!! We constantly heard people walking and running all the time - it was very disturbing.

That was on a smaller older ship, so when we went on a newer ship and were underneath the aft pool area, we thought it wouldn't be as bad. Wrong!

After those two cruises, I swore I would never put any of our clients in that situation unless they threatened me!

As usual, those guarantee cabins can be good and bad; good pricing, but sometimes bad location.

However, when you do get your cabin assignment and you find out it's not a great location, sometimes your agent can get you moved. But if you booked it directly with the cruise line, chances are it won't happen. Sometimes, it pays to use an agent.

Why do cruise lines call forward cabins on higher decks where a lot of noise can be heard upgrades? For light sleepers like Mom and people with balance problems like me, that is a downgrade!

I read the reason wheelchair accessible cabins are forward is to make more people book them because they are the worst.

Not all cabins forward on high decks are noisy - it depends on where they are and what's above them. Being below the spa area, for example, is not a noisy situation. And being forward is not always a bad place to be - depends on the ship, the weather conditions, and the location. All the newer ships have the latest stabilizing devices, so the ride is alot more comfortable than on the smaller older ships.

And not all wheelchair accessible cabins are in the front - depends on the ship and the category. Many handicapped cabins are in the middle close to the elevators.

    soon to set sail

we are off to singapore on friday, setting off on our 33 nighter to (main ports) Burma, India & Egypt.

Glad I paid extra and at least have a cabin with natural light streaming through, albeit small portholes.

Would have gone quite mad in an inside for that length of time, depending of fluoro lights for illumination (walked through a brightly lit supermarket today fluoros burning all across the ceiling, white walls, and felt dizzy!)

    Cheers for now!
