I wouldn't completely trust the upgrade fairy either. Some upgrades aren't a good thing.

I agree with the premis that a paid ungrade is not the same as a real one.
On the other hand, I got one of those calls on for an NCL cruise a few years back. When they told me the price I told them no thank you and suggested that they could call me back if and when the price went down to about 25% of what they were asking. A week later they called and I took it.

I had a free upgrade on NCL

It was great

Untill four in the morning when the noise started

When we got up about 8.30 I had a shower


Then I opened the curtains

There was a guy in the lifeboat looking in the window
as my wife came out of the shower with no clothes on

Our upgrade horror story was more simple (no nudity exposed to the outside world). We had an inside booked on my first cruise. We were upgraded to another inside, but a higher category. But under a galley or dining room. So we heard vacuuming late at night each night.
