I'm inclined to suggest that packercruising be strong in booking a balcony/verandah for a Panama Canal cruise.

It gives you an excellent opportunity of seeing what's going on, without being forced to mingle with "the masses!"

My friend and I had adjoining rooms on the Zuiderdam last November, and persuaded the cabin steward to open the verandah wall between us. We much enjoyed mimosas on our over-sized verandah just a little while after sunrise!

Sorry, but it is the truth. I did call and find that out as our choice was either Royal Caribbean or Carnival for that week. I think that was my preggers cruise so I was being very careful.

It is amazing how one can smell tobacco when someone lits up in a place where it's not allowed. I have been in grocery stores and other places and all of a sudden I can smell it.
Also on Tallink ships not can smoking in dining room. I had seen one people smoked in dining roum and it was bad. Total roum was full by smoke. Smoking ban mark was on every table, big and red
Ship upper deck are the best place for smokers, smoke go away and not disturb.
Ower most bad are smoking in cabin

Tallink ships have some small cabins with balcony. (theys are wery costly)
While I went in stockholm by Tallink ship, I was more time on deck and enioyed wounderful view to sea.
In windowsless cabin was wery boring, sometimes I went eating in cabin or sleeped. Walking on ship was interesting, I enioyed walk on ship and get wisit some interesting places on ship, Cabin was boring place
If cabin ought have window are more interest. Get see great wiew to sea. The balcony cabin are ower most interesting.

We only stay in our cabin to sleep because we don't waste time to stay in cabin, there are so many other nice things to do onboard.

If the ship goes where you want to go when you want to go, then go.

    Balconies are great

We have been on 15 cruises and always book an inside because of the price but two years ago we got our first taste of a balcony and now always like the balcony.
We got the balcony on our 14 day trip around South America and really enjoyed it.
I love the view when sailing in and out of all the harbors. Sometimes though it was to cold to spend out there and very rough around the Cape Horn area so stayed inside most of the time. There was alot of sea days and we enjoy the balcony especially in the morning and have room service coffee delivered and drink a couple of cups of coffee on the balcony.
Last November we went to Australia/New Zealand and got an inside because the airfare was very expensive so decided to do the inside on Princess. The room seems small at first but then we got used to it and it was fine. I sleep better in an inside cabin.
Caribbean cruises we will only get a balcony from now on because it is usually warm and we enjoy just watching the ocean go by.
Depends on where you are going, the weather and it you book a cheaper inside cabin then you can spend that money on other things on that cruise or saving for an upcoming cruise. Happy sailing.

I have to agree with Char, and I will do my best to be polite as well. When I was growing up, smoking was allowed everywhere, so most places had residual smoke odors.

Today, I live in a house where no one smokes, I drive a car where no one smokes, I work in an office where no one is allowed to smoke, I eat in restaurants, shop in stores, etc, where there is no smoke. Now when I visit my parents, who smoke, it's almost as if a cloud of smoke comes to greet me when I open the door. They don't notice it, but everyone who visits does.

On a ship where smoking is allowed on balconies (or rather "happens" on balconies), we notice it more, because we are around it less. And when the ship leaves certain Caribbean ports, the smoke may not be tobacco!

For people who want a balcony, and don't want to take a chance of smelling fumes or getting high, I recommend getting as close to the bow of the ship as you can, since smoke tends to flow to the aft.
