I am in E46 on the Carnival Ecstacy. It looks like it's right under the 'mall'. I don't expect there to be a lot of 'activity' at night when everyone is sleeping. Does anyone have any experience with this cabin or deck level?
We were on the Conquest last summer and our cabin (on the Upper Deck) was right at the front of the ship. I LOVED IT. The 'mini deck' right out our window was like our own personal deck. I would stand out there every night before bed (sometimes in my jammies) and just enjoy the quiet and the breeze.
Unfortunately, the Ecstacy doesn't have cabins up front. Anyone?
Let me check the deck plans and I'll get right back to you.

I haven't sailed on the Ecstacy yet but it looks like a good location to me and very close to the elevators too. The stores usually close down at 10 or 10:30, so the noise from that shouldn't be a problem. But it is close to the Blue Sapphire Lounge where all the shows take place, but most shows are over by 11:30 or midnight.

What is the difference between the bow area vs. the stern area regarding cabin selection?
I went on a cruise 2 years ago and lucked out. I booked a balcony cabin that was one deck above the boat deck and was forwardmost. About right under the bridge. We like it quiet. Don't like to hear bangs, clanking of elevators, the rumble of clubs etc.
Oh yes! Is there any way to determine the best side of the ship to have a cabin? ( Notwithstanding the noise problems that may be an issue) For example: Choosing port/stbd for the best views coming into port etc?
We had this cabin when we did a B2B2B on the Fascination. Whereas we had the best cabin steward ever, the location was terrible! It was the cabin directly over the gangplank and early in the morning when they dropped the gangplank it sounded as though a torpedo had hit the ship! And it was always early in the morning so I'd leap out of bed thinking we'd been hit

LOL Titanic movie come to real life... - wait that would not be funny
For All - I believe this has been mentioned a few times, but looking at the deck plans can save you big time... Here is why...
When booking for the Oasis I never used Royals cruise people and they do not really care, I mean some do, but some don't. I had one who did not. I do take part blame because I called from work, so I was unprepared, it was kinda spontaneous.. DUMB. Anyway, I just said give me a Balcony on this date blah blah, careless about the rest of the stuff... Well she gave me a balcony in the back, which would be fine (nice sunsets I hear) but after reviewing the deck plans I found the flow rider will be near me and the aqua theater I was like NO NO NO, we sleep in... So, I called back and got one rep who cared, and he moved me no problem... I requested in the middle of nothing but staterooms, above and below... He did a perfect job... But, what if there was no rooms available, I would have been screwed, so the tip for having deck plans available is a good one!!

There is a lot to consider depending on your ship and itinerary but I learned one lesson the hard way... the gangplank is on the starboard side of the ship so if you are on a lower deck, it is very loud first thing in the morning. Especially debarkation day! We were woken at about 3:30am.
Also, the tenders are released from starboard side so if you are mid level or higher on the ship, you will get to hear this racket first thing.
If you like to sleep in late at all, sleep port side.
