Talking Good Excursions for kids in Bermuda

    Hello All,
We are talking a family trip to Bermuda this July and I am trying to figure out which excursions our family should plan. We have an 8 and 10 yr old. Any suggestions on things that we cannot miss? Thanks!

    Hello,
We went with our kids in 2004, 2006 and are going again in 2009. Definately go to Crystal caves. Don't do the other cave they offer. Go snokeling at Fort St. Catherines (lots of fish to see and bring bread). If you have a daughter, get her hair braided. Go and watch the swimming with dolphins. The aquarium was neat also. Lots and lots of beaches and the best place to get Pink sand is at horseshoe beach. We did most of this with signing up for excurions and saved a lot of money by buying the bus passes. Really not much for kids to do besides beaches and the above mentioned. If you don't fear driving mopeds, which is what we are doing in 2009, then that's the way to go as you don't have to wait for the bus. Hope this helps. Paul

Thanks so much for the input Paul. Was the beach at Fort St. Catherines pretty calm for your kids? My 8 year old is not that strong of a swimmer yet.I think that is on the east side of the island. I had also heard about a cool beach where you can find a bunch of sea glass. My kids would love that. The aquarium sounds like a good idea too. If you have anymore great suggestions send them my way. Lisa

    Hello Lisa,

Yes the water was very calm at Fort St. Catherines as was Tabacco Bay. My 8 year old daughter at the time of our 2006 trip was not a strong swimmer either and we packed a life jacket for her and took it with us. It was more enjoyable for us knowing she was safer and we didn't need to hold her and she could swim around with us. Well let me know if you find some sea glass in July as we'd like to find some in August 2009 when we go back.

    Thanks Paul

Hi Paul, Good idea about the life jacket. Did you rent snorkel gear or bring your own?I think I read that you can rent gear somewhere on the east side of the island. I think we will get bus passes and take the ferry to the east side go to the beach, look for sea glass and hit the newer cave. Then maybe on the second day go to the aquarium or check out one of the secluded beaches near Elbow beach. Sounds like we are packing a lot in . I wish we had 3 days there. Lisa

    Lisa,

We also bought and brought our own snorkel gear. Glad we did also as we hit several beaches and didn't have to rent each time. Most beaches have snorkel rentals (Yuck) they sit in pools of medicine tasting liquid. I know this as the first year we went did not bring anything and learned from the first time. You'll enjoy it even if you don't get to see everything as Bermuda is beautiful and very clean. Enjoy and get back to me when you return. I'd like to know how you guys enjoyed it. In 2009 it's a different ship sailing from Boston to Bermuda from Friday to Friday and no longer Sunday to Sunday and docking at the Dockyard and not in St. Georges :-( We like the beaches in St. Georges, but will get a chance to explore more of the other side of the island.

Sounds good Paul. I will let you know how it goes. I just looked at Dick's Sporting Goods and saw some snorkel packages that we may get. You are so right about using other peoples gear. Ugh! We have only docked on the est end but I definitely want to hit the other side of the island this time. Just wish we had a bit more time. Have a good week. Lisa

    Lisa,
In St. Georges there is a shop attached to the left side of the building in the alley way where the GlassWorks/Rum Cake Factory store is located to the left of the Town Hall. That's where my daughter had her hair braided.
