Bermuda - Gathered Information

General Description (From the Royal Caribbean Website)

Nearly 600 nautical miles off the coast of North Carolina, this island is known for its pastel painted houses, brilliantly colored gardens, cricket matches and charming shorts. Its pink-sand beaches, excellent shopping, and proximity to the U.S. make it an ideal destination for a getaway cruise vacation.

BERMUDA'S PORTS

Hamilton
This charming port is quintessential Bermuda, with pastel buildings and businessmen bustling around in their jackets, ties and famous shorts. From here, you can set sail to see the more than 350 islands that make up Bermuda. Or grab a game of golf at one of six world-class golf courses in this area.

King's Wharf
This cultural center built at the remarkable Royal Naval Dockyard offers shopping, restaurants, art galleries, craft markets and eight wonderful museums. For water-lovers it also offers a snorkel park and an extensive watersports facility, making it an excellent destination for the whole family

St. George
In the oldest inhabited town of English origin in the New World, you'll find yourself surrounded by history. Visit the Old State House, constructed in 1620, and Gates Fort, built by the original settlers on the shipwrecked Sea Venture, which dates back to 1609. Or set out on a walking tour beginning on Ordinance Island and explore the cobbled streets in town.

At Wikipedia, I found an intersting geographic description of Bermuda

The oldest remaining British overseas territory, it was settled by England a century before the creation of the British state, and two centuries before the United Kingdom. Although commonly referred to in the singular, it consists of around 138 islands, of total area 58.8 square kilometres (27.7 sq. mi). Compiling a list of these islands is often complicated, as many have more than one name (as does the entire archipelago, which, in addition to its two official names, has historically been known as La Garza, Virgineola, and the Isle of Devils). Despite the limited land mass, there has also been a tendency for place names to be repeated (there are two Long Islands, for instance, and two Long Bays, and the town of St. George is located on the island and within the parish of St. George's). The largest island, Main Island (also called Bermuda, or Great Bermuda), is the location of the capital, the City of Hamilton (which is in Pembroke Parish, and is often confused with Hamilton Parish). Bermuda has a thriving economy, with a large financial sector and tourism industry.

Climate

At the Berumda Tourism site, there's a lot of informatin, including this about the weather and climate

Bermuda’s impeccable location keeps our island warmed by the Gulf Stream and the sun’s rays, but free of the tropics’ relentless heat. Our opinion? It is absolutely perfect.
Our extraordinarily pleasant climate rarely sees extremes of either hot or cold. Not even the Queen could resist the temperate conditions warming us year round.
  • The hottest part of our year: May through mid-October, when temperatures hover between 75°F and 85°F
  • During the winter months, temperatures average a balmy 70°F
  • Summer months are somewhat drier, but rainfall is spread relatively equally throughout the year
  • Since rainstorms generate the island’s only supply of fresh water, residents welcome the brief storms — however few and far between
  • Hurricanes are not as prevalent here as in the Caribbean, but they do occasionally visit our island once every seven years or so

Landscape

Also from the Bermuda Tourism website:

More than 100 million years ago, our island was born of a turbulent marriage between fiery lava and the tempestuous North Atlantic waters.

Our picturesque archipelago may span only 20.7SQ MI but it boasts 75MI of the most exquisite coastline in the Atlantic.
  • Surrounded by crystal clear waters warmed by the Gulf Stream, our terrain is low, rolling hills perched in a relatively flat landscape
  • The highest point is Town Hill in Smith’s Parish, which reaches 79M / 259FT above sea level
No island stands alone

Bermuda may seem like one continuous landmass to visitors, but is actually made up of 181 islands, islets and rocks. Most of these are uninhabited, but eight of the larger ones, linked by bridges and one causeway, form the subtropical paradise visitors cannot resist.
  • Travelling from tip to tip of this fishhook-shaped chain of islands, you wind through land that is never more than .8KM / .5MI from the ocean. And usually much closer
  • We have one of the smallest territories in the world. Only Monaco and Gibraltar are tinier

Pink Sand Beaches!

Bermuda is, of course, famous for being one of the few places in the world you can find pink sand beaches. (Barbuda is another)

According to Bermuda's bBoard of Tourism, find the best one at South Beach Park, which includes Horseshoe Bay Beach.

WHY IS THE SAND PINK?
On many beaches, the sand is made of fine particles of coral and shellls, and appears white or beige in color. In Bermuda, mixed in with the coral and shell particles are particles of the shells of foraminifera. Foraminifera are teeny tiny sea creatures that live in the coral reefs in the waters off Bermuda. Their shells are very pinky, and these particles mix in with the others in great quantity, turning the sand there a pink hye.
