Question Preparing Food for your First Night Home?

First night home after a cruise.

Do you prepare some things and freeze before you go to have to eat without going to the grocery for dinner that night and breakfast the next morning?

    nope

since we have no choice but to stay at a hotel at the end of flights -- we get home by 11 am

then we go to giant eagle -- buy a rotesserie chicken that's already cooked -- make some mashed potatoes an green beans -- quick easy dinner

How well prepared of you Lulu! I must say - I'm typically taking Yonnie's approach upon returning home from any kind of travel.

What's your favorite meal to return to? We have a couple in-house specialities we've been known to make ahead of time - and freeze, but I don't think they'd win any awards.

our power goes out all too often -- thus i keep very little food in the freezer -- don't want a big expense when we get home

With 3 teen boys we always have frozen pizzas in the freezer, so typically that's what we end up eating the day we get back. I know compared to the ship's food it's not very appetizing, but if it means I don't have to immediately go to the grocery store then I'm all for it!

We wouldn't have any prepared meals in the freezer when we're gone for a couple of weeks. Sometimes my hubby would freeze any extra chicken he's grilled, but we'll defrost and use by the next week.

After our last cruise, my daughter put in a request for Panda Express. Usually if I take her there, I don't eat there (too much pepper, which tends to make me sick). But that day, we'd ordered a three entree and the three of us ate there.

That's why restaurants were invented, we eat out as vacation isn't over until we go back to work the next day. I eat breakfast at work, so no problem there.

Yonnie, that's a Great Sugguestion for our SECOND night home ... when I'm not still not ready and too tired to do any major cooking.

After eating out everyday on a cruise the last thing we want to do is go out to a restaurant for a while.

This isn't an award winner ... but it does give us an easy and balanced meal:

Slow cook a beef roast in the oven with small red potatoes, onions, carrots, celery, and a little onion soup in a baking dish. When it's done, I feeze it in the same baking dish.

I don't have to do anything when we get home except stick the same baking dish in the oven or micro to reheat.

    OTHER SUGGESTIONS would be appreciated.

our routine had to change a couple of years when us airways and delta dropped more flights in our area

now our ft lauderdale flights don't get into pittsburgh until 4:30 or later -- wait the better part of an hour for luggage -- then take the shuttle to our car - usually we don't get to the car until around 6:30 -- joe is already past dinner medications -- and to drive 2 hours home with no dinner -- makes things worse

so we just go to the embassy suites for dinner -- get a good night's sleep -- good breakfast in the morning and we are ready to drive home

empty out the car and head to the grocery store

micro-wave -- ours is used only to heat water and popcorn -- it is a waste to even own one -- i hate food cooked in the micro-wave
