Question Are you prepared for the possibility of a delay retuning home?

Before a cruise do you consider that you might be delayed returning home as planned (acts of God, strikes, etc.) and prepared for the extra expenses of an extended stay?

I was rather amazed at the large number of people who were "camped out" in a NY airport for 6 days or so with no shower because of the volcano. There were hotel rooms available BUT they didn't feel they could afford them.

Seems even those of us without great means would be aware any travel could cause extra expenses? At that point I'd be more worried about finding a decent hotel room than how much it would cost ... even if it ment giving up something I'd planned later.

What are your thoughts on this?

I would have to start spending on my credit card and then worry about paying it off later.

These are the same people who go out in their cars when snow is forecast without a coat let alone a spade.

Do I consider it, No. I try not to 'cheap out' and purchase travel insurance. Most policies cover trip interuption. I also travel with a paid off credit card so I can cover most 'normal' delays and expenditures. After a few days I would be more likely to head back home than continue with my vacation plans.

I always take an extra weeks worth of our medications "just in case". We have only had one delay in getting back home and that was from Barcelona when the Delta flight never left the US and we had no plane in Barcelona.

Delta was wonderful. They had a whole planeload of folks to take care of and I was impressed with how they responded. We were put up in a nice hotel with all meals and 2 overseas phone calls per person. The next day we were sent to Paris and then to the US...they upgraded us to first class!

But I digress! We always buy travel insurance and can subsidize our expenses for as long as it takes to get home again---as long as it isn't for more than a week! (meds would run out)

Unless I was totally being ripped off (as if those nice hotel people would) if would have found a hotel & stayed there until I could get home. I like to have a "spare" credit card for this sort of thing, survive first worry about it later.

Char .... Good Thought! You're making me re-think meds! We also only take enough for an extra week. Maybe we should take more!

Wouldn't bother me at all. I would just get a hotel room and "extend" my vacation a little longer. I always carry half a dozen credit cards, one of them is bound not to be maxed out yet.
