We have been fortunate in that we have never been delayed more than a few hours returning from any of our cruises. I have enought credit cards that money would not be a problem if there were hotel rooms available. I have only been packing extra meds for a couple days and may increase that amount.

We did get stuck once in Whitefish Montana after a ski trip back in 1980. We were to take the train home. They were still using steam engines back then and the train froze up in eastern Montana. There were about 180 of us stuck in a little train station. Hotel rooms were not an option. The train did arrive about 24 hours late.

We were stuck in Orlando for 4 days once when our City got hit with a blizzard and everything was shut down. We had credit cards and cash with us so it was not an issue.

One time we were on a land vacation and got stuck in Rapid City, SD because someone in our group had an accident. Even though it was during the Sturgis Rally, we were able to find hotel rooms, we just had to split up our group of 12 between 2 hotels.

I have a hard time believing that all the hotels could be fully booked. If you're stuck somewhere, there are many people who are stuck in other places and can't make it to the place you're currently stuck at.

We always have a backup plan in case something happens, but hope to not have to use it.

The "ash" thing was virtually unprecedented as far as numbers of people were concerned...literally tens of thousands in Europe.
