I have brought maps of where we were going, to tape to our cabin wall. This is particularly interesting when river cruising and cruising through fjords.
I've made up simple language charts for our cruises to help us say "Please, Thank you, Do you speak English?, Where is a bathroom? Men, and Women" in all the languages for each of the places we would be going. I made copies for other cruisers as well, and while I always found someone who spoke English, it was good to know that I had something to fall back on just in case.
On one cruise, I brought exercise DVDs to use in our stateroom, but never touched them. My excuse is that there weren't enough days at sea.
On our last cruise, even though we had lots of storage in our bathroom, I brought a Travel Roll-up bag, similar to the one below. It has 4 pouches that attach to a board with velcro. I packed the pouches in corners of my suitcase along with the board, and then attached them in the cabin, and hung the whole thing onthe back of the door. It takes up less space on the door and in a suitcase than the shoe bag, and I had all my "tools" already grouped together to put into the bathroom.

On hiatus from cruising, but still very interested!!!
MCcruise: I actually have that exact Mary Kay set...my husband thinks I'm crazy when I pack all my goodies in it for the cruise and then hang it on the back of the door of our cabin...but I say hey, it works doesn't it?!?!![]()
Command hooks. You can never have too many places to hang things!
Did you realky think Tim Hortons is just a Canadian restaurant? Think again. I can walk to it in central Ohio (south of Lake Erie, if your geography sucks). There are other branches of it I have passed in the car, but not stopped at. So there is a good chance you wil find several Americans by packing Tim Hortons stuff.
The only thing on my packing list I would consider "weird" is apple juice just to make sure I can get a drink right away when I arrive. If everyone sold apple juice or milk, I would never do this. I absolutely hate the taste of all other beverages except hot chocolate, which has burned my tongue a couple times, milkshakes, and smoothies. So if I don't know I can get a bottle of apple juice wherever I am traveling, I will pack it in my suitcase.
