Less than half an hour if your hotel is near or on the waterfront (see Holiday In on the Bay, just up the street from San Diego's cruise ship piers). For that one, you ride a shuttle, not a private or rental car.

How about this for a cruise benefit: Make new friends. Only on a cruise ship can we always have the smae waiter and table mates every night.

LOL, it's not so easy for us. Minimum drive is 2 hours and that's just to the airport. Then all day to the destination city. Then an overnight stay in a hotel.
But who cares! A cruise is worth every mile and every cent.

On our Thanksgiving cruise out of Charleston it'll be easy for us. Two hour drive to the cruise terminal and we're on the ship! That's why we picked this one!

    Sometimes easy, sometimes not

    You got that right!

However, it is important to remember the word "easy" is subjective. Easy for one traveler is difficult for another. In my case, there is nothing easy about getting to the pier except I do not have to get up too early in the morning to get there. But like you said, it is worth all that money spent on airfare, lodging, and ground transportatoin.

We live an hour's driving distance from the Port of LA. We're burned out on the Mexican cruises but we do want to repeat our Hawaiian cruise, which also leaves from there.
