Canada Entry Requirements

Not sure if this is the right area, seemed logical, but if not, I am sorry to make a mod do extra work

Anyway, I have a friend, who has a friend (for real) who has a dwi or dui conviction and when they got to the border the dui offender was denied entry.

So, out of my own denial (not that this friend would lie to me, I just thought they were looking for an excuse to keep a car load of guys out of their country) I did some google searches and found Canada is pretty strict. Now, I think some of the stuff I read is not the full truth.

ANYWAY, to the question, has anyone heard stories of someone (maybe not someone you know) who was denied a cruise because it had ports of call in Canada, or was told they are not allowed to get off at a certain port because the country did not want them.

I assume with a ship they just do random checks on people?

Anyone know, seems like a very gray area... Feel free to talk about a different port someone might have been denied as I am curious about that too!

An interesting question.

There has been considerable reportage of 'do not fly' lists and who is and is not on them. But to be honest, I do not recall a single article on cruise 'do not board' lists.

I've done a short 'net search on this, seeking specific regulations, but I've drawn a blank.

A direct query to the US State Department might eventually prove fruitful, but they may be a tad slow in answering.

A friend of mine was on probation last year for a violent felony. He took a cruise carrying a letter of permission from his probation officer. No one questioned him. He got off the ship in the Caribbean ports with no reported problems. He came back no problem. Just wondering, who would he have told?

When he made his reservation, no one asked him if he was a felon or if he was on probation. He just booked his cruise. Now with a coupe of thousand people on board, they probably just do a percentage sampling of people to check. When a van load of a bunch of guys drives up to the border, they probably check everybody a LOT more closely.

Yeah. I think stuff I read was just the rare occasions.

I also questioned my friend more and it turns out he was not even with them and they let him in anyway after he bought a temp resident card (200 bucks).

So, I think it is a case by case basis.

Another question, does your friend have a passport - and if yes did he have a tough time getting it?

To my knowledge, anyone with a criminal conviction will be turned away. That includes drunk driving charges. It's the same for Canadians entering the U.S.

That is what I heard as well. I believe we share information, which is good in a way.
