Listening in.

If you're 'into' scanners*, there's no reason to leave yours at home when cruising.

Not only do you have an opportunity to listen in to some rather exotic transmissions in various ports, but you can also enjoy hearing the communications of your cruise ship. Docking and undocking are interesting activities to follow.

A listing of ship-specific frequencies are at:

Cruise Ship and Maritime Monitoring by dxzone.com

Your FRS transceivers can also be of limited service aboard ship.

*Scanner: a UHF/VHF radio receiver which can be programmed to search through specific frequencies [or ranges of frequencies] and lock on to those which are active at the moment. Caution! Can become addictive for some people!

Love Bring My Scanner.....

I always bring my Scanner to listen in on the ship and areas we visit.

I have never really been quested by the Security Staff on the Pier about it.

It is sometimes interesting to listen to the operations of the pier and also the ship.

On the QM2 I can listen in on Hotel Operations, Deck & Bridge Operations and also Pierside operations.

Just like the last cruise in July, we listened in and found out why we were going to be late in leaving the pier due to some people coming late from a airport. I knew about it before everyone else and then the Captain made an announcement.

We also heard some other people were going to be late and the Captain was not able to wait and we were going to pick up those people in Halifax, our next port.

I also like to listen in on some of the islands but interesting to listen to the US Ports and regular cities ex. Boston, Miami, etc...

You just have to find the frequencies before you leave or do a search in the areas you will be docked in.

Maybe if my scanner waas a newer smaller model i would do this. But mine is a bit bulky. Guess I'll just keep only using it at the races.
