Yes, always take them. Especially when we have an aft balcony, you can see all kinds of things. Last year in Alaska we saw tons of whales spouting and breeching, it was great!

Question : We have several pairs of binoculars (football fans ... get as gifts ... also live on a lake so do us them at home ). Think (a gift). Thinking ...I will need to pack them in my carry-on rather than my checked luggage?

Definitley keep them in your carry-on. While airport security is supposed to be ...er... secure, I would be a bit apprehensive since the employees can now open suitcases.
