Ok here is a question for some of you that may know. I couldn't find the answer on the passport site.
I have a bil that did some jail time. He wants to get a passport. What are the limitations as far as that goes? Can he get one?

He should not have a problem getting a US passport to the Caribbean, Canada , Mexico, but may have a problem getting into overseas ports that requires a Visa!!
Some people try to turn back their odometers. Not me! I want people to know why I look this way. I've traveled a long way, and some of the roads weren't paved.
Thanks Sue I will pass on the info.

Sue is 100% correct!
Depending on the circumstances of his incarceration, there is usually not a problem with getting a passport. But there are some situations that could prevent him from getting one - for example if he was convicted of a felony and need the court's approval to leave the country. If it's a simple misdemeanor, it shouldn't affect him.
However, sometimes even for a misdemeanor his entrance into another country may be denied. For example, if your BIL was planning to fly into Vancouver to do an Alaskan cruise, they may deny him entrance even though a visa is not required. He would have to apply for a special exemption. We've seen people with DUI convictions denied entrance.
So if he plans to do a cruise to the Caribbean, there won't be any problem. But if he has to fly into or out of a foreign country, he should check with them to see if there are any special requirements.

Ah yes, that good ole wacky tabacky. Shouldn't be a problem getting a passport since it's a misdemeanor and it won't be a problem going to the Caribbean. Just have to be careful of those ganja vendors in Jamaica.
