The only cost variable is the picture. The passport itself is (I think) $65 (I'm assuming US). For most people the most convenient site is the closest Class 1 Post Office.
Check the message from Rex regarding Passport Information for US Citizens. There is a link to the State Department. We got ours at the US Post Office near us. Current price is about $97.00. We had to provide the 2 photos but I've noticed that some Post Office locations have cameras for the photos. Get them NOW so you have plenty of time to concern yourself with other things...like clothes, excursions, etc! Enjoy your cruise!
The passport cost is the same everywhere.. $97 for adults (16 and over) and $82 for those under 16. Passport photos vary in price, we found that Wal-Mart usually was the cheapest (unless you have a Meijer.. they were only $7.97 at the one in Chicago). Normal processing time is 6 weeks (we got ours in 4).
Got our photos at Walgreens, $8.95 for 2. You're correct about the price for adults--Application fee is $55, Security surcharge $12, Execution fee $30=$97.00. It took 5 minutes for the photos and 4 weeks to get the passports in the spring of the year.
I had my passport done at the post office with photo included the price of $ 110.00.
Worth every penny, small easy to carry and flash at check in....

Try some of your local government offices. Our Township hall does them as does the City hall in the next town over. Same price as the post office. CVS does photos at about $8.00. We got ours at the AAA office for free.

when our daughter needed her passport renewed, my hubby decided to use his digital camera. I printed out the photo requirements from the US passport website and he futzed around until he produced ones that fit the guidelines (the face must be so big, the eyes at a certain place). It was a hassle. We took them to the post office and the clerk said the resolution probably wouldn't pass muster. But she sent them in and the photos weren't rejected. Hubby figured she's told to push for having the photos done at there (someone else said they were told the same thing for photos taken elsewhere).
It's very easy now to get the passport processed at the post office. It used to be you had to get an appointment. That was nearly impossible at the closest center near us some five years ago as the phone number to call was always busy during their hours. So I ended up having to drive to the LA Airport post office to process our applications.

Often I see mention of passport photo services listed in various circulars for our local drugstores. Check them out in your area as well as the auto club and Walmart. And many photo stores have the machines too.

Our local police station is a Passport acceptance facility, so we went there. Printed the forms off the State Dept. site in advance, filled them in, and took only 15 minutes to get the pics, sign the affidavit, etc when we got there (there were 2 of us). Painless!
