    Passports

FYI Just renewed passport almost 7 weeks,w/o any special handling. As we get near the end of year the wait time will get greater. Don't wait till last minute,DO IT NOW.

Jan is in the process now and after 5 weeks she started wondering, so her hubby did some checking on line. He found it will be about another month before she gets it. She was surprised as last time said it only took a couple weeks.
Sounds like it is best to get a real early start on that. I don't have to worry till 2009!

    I just applied

on May 22, and online it shows I should receive it by July7th.
The application office is telling everyone 8 weeks minimum now.

My husband was born in Japan on a naval military base. He only had a birth certificate from the hospital in Japan. We applied for record of birth abroad, and amazingly we got that back in 2 weeks. ( we did pay priority return mail. ) He has now applied for a passport . Hopefully it will get here in time for our Sept cruise even though we dont need it then. I did get duplicate copies of the certificate abroad since I knew we had to mail one with the application.

I know we dont need passports for this trip, but we figured we might as well get it out of the way.

My friend is cruising in February, and she had no clue she would need a passport then. I told her she better get on it with the rush that is going to occur.

    Happy 4th to all !

I would hope that renewals are quicker than new ones as they don't have as much to check and I hope that they did such a great job the first time on everybody that they trust they don't have to recheck the original information.

    we are hoping...

that my hubbys comes in faster. He had a passport as a 12 year old, but we have no clue what happened to it. His dad has since passed, and we don't know where it is. We did mark on the application that he had one previously, so hopefully his will come faster than mine is.

When we took our daughter in to get hers renewed last September, the clerk said it's a good time to go (after the summer rush and before the winter vacation rush). We got her new one in a few weeks without any expedited fee. It is a good idea not to wait until the last minute. The woman in front of us had ordered an expedited one and then her order got caught in a flooded office in New Orleans and she had to pay another expedited fee and hope to get that refunded.

BTW, if you need to get one for a minor (esp. under 10 years old), whether first time or renewal, both parents need to go in person along with the child. That's a major change from six years ago, when I just went down with the photos and the checks to the LAX post office and took care of it.

On our recent Statendam Alaskan cruises, one evening was set aside for a couple of hours for people who wanted to get passport photos. Since we already have passports, I have no idea what HAL was charging for them.

Here in Michigan and I assume in other parts of the country, AAA takes passportphotos for free if you are a AAA plus member

    Update

I applied for mine on May22. The web site said I should receive it by July 7th. I'ts not here yet. That is 7 full weeks so far.

My hubby applied on June 22. ( we had to get a certificate of birth abroad first , which came in 2 weeks ) . When I check him on the website, he doesn't even show in their system yet

We don't "have" to have them for this cruise in September, as I have certified copies on hand of our birth records, but if any of you are cruising after the new year, I would start now.

    Good luck

    Sue
