    luckily

I don't need it in a hurry. We are fine if it doesn't make it here until September.

I am not sure on the renewel. But at least I will have the paper work and will send anyways !

It just amazes me how some have no problem, and some do under the same circumstance.

When it came time to renew ours a couple of years ago, I got mine back in 2 weeks. DH's didn't come back until 6 weeks later. And they were sent at the same time.

I remember sending off letters about my name change after my wedding. Then when I was pregnant (less than 2 years later), my bil had the idea that we (he, hubby and I) should change our last name -- before the baby -- as it's one of those that isn't pronounced the way it's spelled. I said I just went through changing my name a short time before and didn't want to go through all that trouble again. Plus, there would be a hearing fee to pay. He offered to pay the costs (he didn't have a job so he wouldn't have the money anyway) but gave up after a while.

Post US State Department latest passport update

The Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004 requires that by January 1, 2008, travelers to and from the Caribbean, Bermuda, Panama, Mexico and Canada have a passport or other secure, accepted document to enter or re-enter the United States. In order to facilitate the implementation of this requirement, the Administration is proposing to complete it in phases following a proposed timeline, which will be published in the Federal Register in the near future.
In the proposed implementation plan, which is subject to a period of initial public comment, the Initiative will be rolled out in phases, providing as much advance notice as possible to the affected public to enable them to meet the terms of the new guidelines. The proposed timeline will be as follows:
    • January 8, 2007 - Requirement applied to all air and sea travel to or from Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda.
    • December 31, 2007 - Requirement extended to all land border crossings as well as air and sea travel.
This is a change from prior travel requirements and will affect all United States citizens entering the United States from countries within the Western Hemisphere who do not currently possess valid passports. This new requirement will also affect certain foreign nationals who currently are not required to present a passport to travel to the United States. Most Canadian citizens, citizens of the British Overseas Territory of Bermuda, and to a lesser degree, Mexican citizens will be affected by the implementation of this requirement.

It looks like the only change is moving the initial air-sea
implementation date from 1 Jan 2007 to 8 Jan 2007.

Renewing is a MUCH easier process. You are, at that point, renewing your most current passport and therefore just have to send in the renewal form with the requesit $.
I can't wait to renew again because my current passport is "ammended". When I got married I sent in my passport and all of the proper docs to have my name changed. They just typed something on the last page that says, "PASSPORT HAS BEEN AMMENDED TO CHANGE THE NAME TO..." and sent it back to me. The TSA & customs staff that don't know to look in other countries get nervous at the incorrect name in the front, until I show them where to look. As a result, I always travel with a photocopy of my marriage certificate, just in case. Once I renew my proper name will show on my passport and I won't have to do that anymore.
Let your conversation be gracious and attractive, so that you will have the right response for everyone.
