Oh boy !! Did this post ever bring back memories !!

I grew up in a military family. Somehow, in our many moves around the country, my birth certificate was lost. I had to send for a new one when I was turning 16, so that I could take the driving test. The birth certificate was coming from Quebec and there were a few language difficulties to be sorted out. The BC took months to arrive - and came with the wrong birthday on it !! I was actually born on the 1st of the month, and the BC said "the 11th". My parents did not feel like dealing with any more red tape and told me to let the birthdate stand. My driving test was rescheduled. No problem.

    Well - not quite.

On my 21st birthday - no ID. On all my documents, my birthdate on the tax rolls, drivers license, and passport says I was born on the 11th. I know it isn't true, but can't prove it.

Years later I lose the BC. Months of wrangling over the phone with a few language difficulties again, and I get the replacement BC. I guard this one with my life.

I applied for a new passport three years ago and discovered that the precious birth certificate would no longer be valid and any that were issued before a certain date were " not acceptable". My husband thought that this would be no problem. By now, I know better. We are leaving for another cruise in 8 months and I am painfully aware that this may not be nearly enough time !!

It was six months of waiting, and a call to our Member of Parliament, before the new birth certificate arrived. It came in the mail on exactly the same day that another letter arrived telling me that my application for a birth certificate was rejected ( no reason given) !!!!! Talk about the left hand not knowing what the right hand was doing ! It was exactly the same as the "no good" certificate -with one awful exception. It had my correct birth date on it for the first time in 50 years. Now all my other ID - SS card, tax information, driver's license, was in error. It took more than a year to sort out the mess.

My passport and my BIRTH CERTIFICATE are now locked in a safety deposit box at the bank. If the rules change again, and I have to produce another copy of the BC - I think I'll just apply for refugee status. There is probably less red tape that way.

Not that this will happen 2 u, but when I applied 4 my passport, I sent everything u r suppose 2 send(I was a wreck about that), but they sent me back a temporary passport good 4 one year and a letter stating I needed 2 contact the state in which I was born and get a certified copy( they had questions of it's validity, the seal wasn't raised), but if I did this within a year they wouldn't charge me 4 it.
They sent me this passport , because my trip was so close.
When I got back I did what they told me and I now have a passport good 4 tens years.
I wasn't sure how 2 prove i was me, I sent them EVERYTHING.

Everything is crossed yours goes smoooooooothly.
