I have to admit, that I am really good with packing...I hate taking a bunch of things that never get used. My dh on the other hand is terrible.
We are going to have to pack more carefully on our next cruise, as Song has a weight limit of 50#'s! Jet Blue was 70 in July...we had one suitcase that was 75#...took out some waters and tucked them into the carryon and voila...no $50 charge, lol.
I will be working on a packing list soon..when I pack away the summer clothes, I will actually pack into the packing cubes and put into the suitcases for April! I leave one suitcase empty for hockey tournaments...
We don't take an over the door shoe holder, but we do have one that we keep hanging in the spare closet and put all the little things that we take, so we know just where to find it all.. This saves us a lot of time, as all the little things (extension cord, night lite, deck of cards, mini-mag lite, clock, etc.) are in one place and we don't have to have a scavenger hunt a week before we leave to round it all up ...
But I always pack the "what ifs", and come home with most things not even worn. The one time I didn't even pack a jacket or long pants, we ended up in San Francisco (supposed to be in the Mexican Riviera, 2 hurricanes prevented that), and I had to BUY sweat pants and shirts. I always seem to pare down to the minimum and then bring the maximum!! Husband is opposite, he even counts down his underwear!! I always bring extra...you know, you get sweaty.....
Upcoming cruises:
Sapphire Princess 3/20/2010 7 day Mexican Riviera
Avalon Tranquility 10/22/2010 Budapest to Prague, first river cruise
dobie we are actually cutting by one the number of suitcases we normally take on a cruise for this Mexican Riviera cruise...........I guess that means Rena is taking less shoes
When we do a 3-day, we are able to get by with one rolling suitcase, one hanging bag, and one carry-on between us.
For a four-day, we may add one piece of luggage.
For a seven-day, we take a rolling cuitcase each, probably two hanging garment bags and a carry-on.
If the ship calls at Roatan, all bets are off! Last time, we had six suitcases, two carry-ons, a couple of duffle bags, and three large cardboard boxes. Our Crown Vic was stuffed to the gills!
If anyone would like to help out the orphanage in Roatan, Honduras, I'll gladly do my best to help you help them by getting a bag of supplies to you prior to your sailing! Mai Tai Mama and MCCruiser will, too, if you are near them. You can email us at: caringcruisers@csiroatan.org (be sure to use .org and not.com)
I thought the list was pretty good, I only crossed off 8-10 items. Most of the time when I find lists on message boards, I cross off 20-50 items. There's a popular Calgon list floating around the internet for years now, I crossed off 100 items before I even got out of the carry on section!
I'm trying to pack lighter all the time, it's just easier all around. Much less to organize and repack to haul home. I actually find it more difficult to pack for shorter trips than longer ones, because a trip of 3 days or less, you really don't have time to send things out for laundering.
I have cut way back on shoes, makeup, toiletries and electrical items. We wear the same pants 2-3 times, we have our shirts laundered. I thought I would miss the stuff, but it actually feels good to be unemcumbered. The flights home are always great, we even check through our carry ons at that point (everything is empty or dirty by then!).
