John's not kidding you.
Our East Coast is very scenic, but downright dangerous for swimming.
Rip currents are probably the biggest threat to life
and every 2 or 3 yrs. we get a drowning or two
-usually some turkey tourist who didn't heed the warning signs posted up and down the coast (in several languages).
There are a few spots where it's either safe or relatively-safe
but you'd better be with a knowledgeable local to point them out for you.
I recently discovered a neat swimming hole, about 10 ft. dia. and about 5 ft. deep
carved out of the solid reef, right next to one of the big coastal boulders
almost in front of Bonito Bar at Bathsheba (to its left as you face the ocean)
Locals have known about it for ages, but for me it was a recent discovery..(I'm slow)
I think that's it I see at extreme left in the photo above..
I'm told that people in the area call it The Basin.
