Hope no cruise ships are damaged, hope nothing is damaged, or anyone hurt.
It happened this afternoon.
Here iare some more details from an article:
7.0-magnitude earthquake has struck Haiti at 4:53 PM local time, according to U.S. Geological Survey website. The epicenter is reported to be 15 kilometres (10 miles) south west of the capital of Port-au-Prince. It is being reported that a hospital has collapsed in Petionville. CNN is reporting screams for help were heard. However, no reports of injuries or deaths have surfaced yet. The earthquake has also prompted a tsunami warning, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center. A local tsunami warning is in effect for Haiti, Cuba, Bahamas and Dominican Republic. There are now reports of two aftershocks: 5.9 and 5.0 in magnitude that followed at 5:00 and 5:12 PM.
It wads originallyy reported at 7.3, but then downgraed to a 7.0. Still VERy strong, and many of the homes and public bulidings in Hatai are not very strong, so it probably caused major, major destruction
Tsunami Warnings have now been cancelled
The damage in Haiti is going to be unimaginable
Well thats good, but the last part is horrible!
Yes . . . there are already reports of major building collapses, to say nothing of many many homes.
It is said that hospitals, schools, and government buildings have 'crumbled.'
Many people must be trapped in the rubble.
Haiti does not have anything at all in the way or emergency services ... no emergency phone system (like 911), few ambulances, some small towns with no real roads going to them... even the capital has miserable roads in the besst of circumstances... Rescue operations will be crazy hard, because it will be difficult to even get to where some of the people are trapped, much less hope for good equipment...
In Port-Au-Prince, especially the poorer setions, houses are literally built on top of one another... just stacked up. And on hillsides, too. They probably just collapsed on top of one another.
