Brisbane has two piers that they use for the more and more frequent cruise ships visits to Brisbane. The first is the Multi-User FI Grain Terminal located at the Brisbane Port and is only used in the case Portside is already booked. Developed with shipping in mind, unfortunately there is very little for the tourist to see or do, with just a small cafe, ATM. Transportation is also more difficult with no public transport in the area. Taxis are available and most ships will organise a shuttle bus from the pier to a central pick up/drop off point in the city. There is also parking available for family, friends or private tour guides to pick up and drop off.
However, the purpose built cruise terminal “Portside” is a very different story. Located in Hamilton, the other side of the river Portside is a new, clean, modern, state of the art facility combining a first class cruise terminal, world class dining and retail options.
Located approximately a 15 minute drive from the city or from the domestic airport taxi is the easiest way to reach the terminal. Coming from the airport the price should be no more than $30.00 and the return journey is the same, with helpful signs advising passengers of the price upon arrival. Public transport is also available via bus or ferry, however both result in a approximately 300m walk, which may not be feasible with luggage. The ferry can be taken from many central stops including Riverside Centre, Southbank, New Farm Park and Bulimba and the stop you need to get off at is Brett’s Wharf. Alternatively, the bus departs from stop 18, City Hall. The stops is also known as Brett’s Wharf. Both the ferry and the bus are great options for those arriving as a port of call, although the ferry is much more scenic. Timetables and prices for both options are available from Translink.
Signage at Portside is very clear and easy and Brisbane has a very much appreciated take on the sometimes stressful embarkation process. Simply follow the below steps:
1) Baggage Drop Off – your taxi will be permitted to take you up very close to the baggage drop off area – then remembering to take your hand luggage, passports and documentation leave all bags with the embarkation crew.
2) Check in – The Check in lounge is located no more than 15m from the baggage drop off area. With seating for a couple of hundred people and a large check-in area this is where you will collect your boarding pass and be advised of your approximate boarding time.
3) Relax – Like they say Portside wharf offers many ways to relax before boarding. Enjoy a late lunch, ice cream, see the travel agency for your next cruise, take in a movie, browse the shops or simply grab a seat and enjoy the sunshine.
4) Board Ship – When it comes time to board there will be an announcement in the check-in lounge and throughout the entire Portside Wharf to advise you to make your way to the gangway.
And then Bon Voyage!
