    Worldwise Travel ..fraudulent?

Oh boy. My father who is 85 got hooked into buying a "cruise" for two for the price of 1 etc etc by these fast talkers. I looked them up on google and they have some major complaints against them. Seems it's one of those, buy now or never type things.

He used a cc and now I'm wondering how he can get out of it. He has no intention of taking a cruise, but thought he would "give" it to us. He is in Georgia and I'm in California, so it's a little hard to talk to him about this. I did call him back and tell him that I thought he got taken. OF course, he doesn't think so. I did make him promise to call the agency tomorrow to see if he can somehow get out of it and then I told him to call his CC issuer to let them know that he had no idea of what he was doing.

I'm a bit more than ticked off about this. Any ideas anybody?

I don't blame you for checking into this. Hopefully you can talk him into contacting his credit card firm to cancel it (and send a registered letter to the agency to cancel the cruise). Is there another family member in Georgia that can talk to him?

Hanna-I sorry to hear about this situation. Definitely the CC company should be able to help.

No there isn't, but I sure wish there was. As far as I'm concerned, I might just take a drive to Vegas and whack these people. This is a clear case of taking advantage of the elderly.

There should be a timeframe that any purchase can be cancelled. Best thing is to call the credit card company and start the ball rolling.

Is the cruise legit? Is it an OK price? I think it's implied that he got cheated in your post, but you really aren't specific as to what the problem is with the deal. If the cruise line doesn't exist ... he got cheated. If the cruise was sold for more than 150% of the price you can get, he paid too much, but not in a legal sense. But if he was sold a cruise at a price he thought was fair, then ...

Its easy to think our parents are incompetent as they get older and make what we think are stupid financial decisions. But if its their money they are spending, it really doesn't matter what we think. Its their money. And if they want to buy us something we don't think is a good value, well, they can.

I'm waiting for him to send me the papers so I can thoroughly check it out. My major concern is this...my DB and I make sure he has enough money. Therefore we pretty much support him.
He put this on a cc that he had never used. He doesn't have the money to spend really.
And of course he thought the price was fair. He has never sailed! He really wouldn't know the first thing about it. And I'm quite sure he was pressured into it. As I said earlier, I checked them out on the web and they have some major complaints that what people were being sold, wasn't what they were getting.
I realize that these telemarketers have a job to do. But to hard sell a cruise to a 85 year old
person, is just plain wrong in my opinion.

Hanna, when I google I find that there are 2 agencies with similar name. Worldwise and World Wise. Did he indicate Las Vegas? Apparently the one in the northeast is complaint free.

There are a lot of scammers that aim for the elderly. I probably mentioned someplace on CLF a few weeks ago about getting a phone call from some guy asking if I have an elderly person living with us. I didn't give him an answer but was asking him questions of why he was asking. He said his wife has been scamming the elderly pretending to be a psychic and he said my phone number was on some papers in her purse. He also read off my hubby's work number, maybe my cell phone no. (can't remember). But I tried not to give him any info, told him if his wife is a scammer, he should be going to the police and not making these calls himself (even though perhaps the police could just put the info aside, at least if a cop showed up at my door (with ID), I wouldn't mind helping them (just talking to people on the phone just wouldn't do it for me as I don't know if that's a scam).

Anyway, I sent an email to my sister who lives with my 80-ish mother and told her about this phone call as my mother tends to be into this kind of stuff (pyramids, crystals, tarot,etc.). So my sister could do a bit of spying if she wants (check the checking acct, etc.). If I asked her, who knows what she'll tell me. Hopefully that woman has nothing to do with my mother and it's just the man who got my info that's trying to scam me.
