Kyle:

Your story shows a sad state of lack of oversight. I think you chose your battle as you feel was the best way, and it probably was. I think I may have demanded to see a supervisor about this before leaving the inspection area. Now this probably would have resulted in missing a connecting flight or some other problem caused by the delay. My problem is I tend to get too ornery about such things. My wife, on the other hand would probably have done as you did and left me there to fight my battle. I’m sure when we got back together shed get a kick out of asking me “did you have fun fighting with the customs people and was the cavity search enjoyable?”

On a serious side, I’m afraid your situation has been repeated too many times.

If they don't like you, for whatever reason real or imagined, they can make things quite hellish for you, out of spite. I chose not to take that risk.
Some people who have been given a small measure of authority enjoy abusing that by taking out their personal issues on the public.
Not to say that they do not hold a position of responsibilty, and not all of them are abusive.

You do still have rights and I'm sure you would have won. Of course the question becomes "is it worth the fight?" I fully agree with how you handled this situation.

To go along with your quote; Several years ago, when the kids were young. we were coming home from a day trip to Canada. A stern looking costums or INS officer stopped us, asked what we had to declare and them asked for proof of citizenship. My wife and I brought out our voter registration cards. She then asked "what about the children". Feeling a little goofy that day I said "Oh they're too young to vote". My wife gave me one of those looks like are you dumb or just stupid.

She gave us a chuckle and told to go ahead.

I've found over the years that customs officials have had their sense of humour removed surgically as part of their training.

I had one occasion, back in the '70's, when we were returning from Disney World, and flew into Toronto. The idiots took our kids, ages 7 & 9, into a separate room, while questioning us as to whether we could prove they were ours. I found myself arguing with a Jamaican woman who probably hadn't been in the country as long as the kids had been alive about whether I had the right to bring my own kids into the country. If not for DW, who finally told me to shutup, it could have been the embarrasing moment of a life time.

Back to the subject of picnic lunches, just hit the buffet and take goodies to your room, pack them up in the little cooler that you rememberd to bring, and off you go. Or as I do, tell DH, no way, you are buying my lunch because we may never get back here again and I want another memory.
