Laptop on a cruise ship?

Rather than sit in the crowded internet cafe and typing on those nasty, germ infected keyboards, can I use my laptop? Is there a way I can connect,(for a fee) and sit on my balcony with a tasty cigarette and cocktail?

Depends on which ship you are on. Some ships have ship wide wifi service, others have hot spots throughout the ship. Check with your TA to find out what your ship provides.

On some HAL ships I was able to use the Internet from our verandah -- on others -- nothing.

Ditto here. On the Connie I was able to get internet from my room while on the Noordam I had to go to the internet cafe. Actually using your computer instead of theirs is a much better idea. You have access to your software and can do cut and paste from them to your postings to save time. Likewise for downloads of your e-mail.

Another thing, shipboard connections are SLOW. I have heard that in some ports you can find a hot spot near the ship that can be reached from the ship. It is a much better option if you can find one......

On HAL the only thing that is enabled is a browser so if you want anything else you are out of luck. One of the people in our group tried to print out something and found it impossible using the ship hardware.

The information from the cruise line is not always completely accurate. When I was on the Golden Princess the internet manager said the entire ship was a hot spot. Most of it may have been but my balcony and cabin were not. I was able to find a comfortable lounge outside the internet cafe that worked fine.

But you're still going to pay that 55-75 cents a minute for unbearably slow speed (what a misnomer that it - slow and speed)

It is not unbearable, Pat. But then I like watching grass grow and paint dry.
