The last time we got passports, the clerk in the post office told me that timing is everything. There will be times when many people have just booked a vacation (that they need a passport for) which will make it take longer to get processed. If you're sending in your application when it's more quiet, then you can your passport in just a few weeks. Unfortunately how do you know when it's quiet?

The thing to do is not wait til the last minute. Allow for a few months, just in case there's a problem (or your application gets lost). If we had sent in our renewals a few weeks laer than we did, we would have had a major delay due to Hurricane Katrina as the New Orleans passport office got closed due to flooding. Fortunately, ours came in just a few weeks.

In the meantime, you can make sure you have your official birth certificate as you would need that to get your passport...and if you decide not to get your passport, you will need the b.c. for the cruise.

The Port Charges, or non-commissionables as they're called, is the total of the fees charged by the various ports for the ship to come into port. This pays for the services used, such as the Pilot, dock workers, water, security, etc. Obviously, some ports charge more than others.

However, in the case of an Alaskan cruise, the State of Alaska imposed a $50 per person fee for cruise passengers on top of what the ports charge. This was enacted two years ago and was very controversial. But this explains why the port charges for your cruise are higher than a normal cruise.
