You will need either a passport or an Enhanced Drivers License or similar document. Not all states have the Enhanced Identification cards available.

They have the forms at the Post Office!

It's painless! Just get a passport and look forward to your cruise!

You don't need a passport if it's a closed-loop cruise. By that it means if you are leaving from and returning back to the same U.S. port, i.e. a roundtrip. You will need a passport if you are leaving from one U.S. port and ending the cruise at a different U.S. port or in Canada.

If it's a closed-loop cruise, then all you need is an original birth certificate (not a copy) and a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver's license.

With all that said, I recommend getting your passport anyway. In the long wrong, it's much easier traveling with it and if you ever want to fly outside the U.S., you're going to need it anyway.

If it's Carnival it would be the Spirit, a very nice ship. You will enjoy it Jen.

Since it will be round trip from Seattle you will not need a passport, just a certified copy of your birth certificate and a govt. issued photo ID.

Make sure that the birth certificate has a raised seal on it. Sometimes people have just a birth notice and that's not considered official for this purpose. If you have a local social security office, you can take it in and ask at the counter to see if it's an official copy. If not, contact the county registrar (for example, Santa Clara, Alameda, Monterey where you were born, if you're not living in the county where you were born).

If you are planning to go on more cruises within the next ten years, you might want to consider getting the passports. It does cost a bit, but if you are going on a different cruise in the near future, you might have to get one anyway. And it's nice for ID purposes. My second one is expiring next year as is my daughter's. Hers will be much more complicated as my husband and I will both have to go with her to the post office as she is under 16. I will probably only have to get new photos taken (many drug stores and the Auto Club will take your photo and some post offices that have a passport department will too), fill in the application for the renewal that I can download, and send them in with a check.

BTW, if you do go to your post office to get your passport processed, make sure to bring in any info needed. I remember last year overhearing some woman on the phone asking a parent where and when he and her mother were born.
