We've got a group of four and we'd like to explore the island and check out a few beaches on our own. Does anyone have any experience doing this? If so, what was your experience? Who did you rent through?

Normally I'd just play it safe and rent through a major chain (e.g. hertz or avis) but they don't rent jeeps! However, we're a bit apprehesive about renting from a local company - seems like a lot of opportunity to get ripped off.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!
