Antigua's Warri Festival
When: 13 Oct 2007 (annual)
Where: Multi-Purpose Cultural Centre
Cost: EC$30
Opening Hours: Various
Warri is Antigua's national board game, which made its way there from the West Coast of Africa brought by the men and women who were taken to work as slaves on the Caribbean sugar plantations in the 19th century.
Like many other slave traditions the game was seen as a threat and was driven underground by the Europeans. It has proved to be remarkably resilient however, and was passed on by word of mouth for many years.
Warri refers to the hollows in a thick board made from local island wood and carved into the shape of a fish. The pieces or counters (traditionally known as nickars) were small nuts from the Guillandria Bush. Now they are more often small identical shells found on local beaches. The game can be played with two or more people and the object is to capture 25 counters using your cunning and mental arithmetic.
The game has achieved worldwide popularity and has been previously included in the Mind Sports Olympics in London. The competition is organized in classes. There is the Masters Division, Seniors, Juniors and Novice Division for first-timers. There is also a Women's Open and a Schools' Open. But, as the delightfully named organiser of the festival September Christian insists, competition will be stiff as Antiguans are the best Warri players "on planet Earth". You have been warned.
