Icy Strait Point has been a tender port since it opened for cruiseship calls, but now plans are underway to build a dedicated year-round berth, with $17 million in state funding allocated and just requiring the Governor’s signature, Gaffaney told Cruise Industry News.

The target date for the multi-use facility is 2013.

I was saddened when I read this news. Icy Strait Point in Hoonah is one of the few "unspoiled" areas that you can visit and not be bombarded with Diamonds International and Hard Rock Cafe and the like. I surely hope that Hoonah doesn't succumb to the siren call of "easy money" that has turned popular ports in the Caribbean, Mexico and other parts of Alaska into carbon copies.
