Vancouver Points of Interest
I realize that Vancouver as a city is already covered in the Canada Forum, however, since Vancouver is also the starting point for the majority of cruises headed to Alaska, I thought I’d add a Vancouver section to the Alaska forum as well.
Vancouver, the city nestled in the Pacific Northwest in the Canadian province of British Columbia, and sometimes referred to by some as the prettiest city in the Pacific Northwest, is also the starting and ending point for the majority of cruises that head towards Alaska between May and September of each year.
If you have a chance to stay in Vancouver and its surrounding areas for a short pre or post cruise stay, here are just a few of the attractions you can look forward to:
Capilano Suspension Bridge – the longest suspension bridge in the world, this is surely and adventure for those of you who are not faint of heart. Located in North Vancouver and only a short drive over the Lion’s Gate Bridge, the Capilano park also includes admission into the new Treeptops experience. It’s a great way to spend a couple of hours, albeit somewhat pricey. There is also a unique collection of totem poles at the park.
Stanley Park – the largest park located within a metropolitan city on the West Coast. Stanley Park is the highlight of many people’s journeys to Vancouver. You can take a great stroll along the sea wall for great views of Vancouver and the Lion’s Gate Bridge. The world famous Vancouver Aquarium, home to the popular beluga whale exhibit is also located within the park. Bike paths abound and a free trolley will drive you through the park stopping at several points along the way. There is also a childrens play area as well as a small totem park. The best thing about Stanley Park is that its free!
Lookout! at Harbor Centre Tower – located only a few short blocks from Canada Place Pier, the Lookout! provides visitors with a 360 degree view of Vancouver for a nominal fee.
Chinatown – with one of the largest Chinatowns in North America, this bustling area is a great place to stroll along and look at the fresh fruits and vegetables being sold by the vendors as well as a great place to stop and have lunch at a Chinese Restaurant. Also stop by Dr. Sun Yat Sen’s garden, which is a replication of the private gardens of Shanghai, China.
Granville Island – a small island located just south of downtown Vancouver, it houses a daily farmer’s market. A great place for the family to go for food, fun and people watching. Be warned that its crowded, especially on the weekends, so driving yourself might not be the best idea.
Robson Street – the trendy shopping area of Vancouver. This street is lined with designer and well known stores as well as restaurants and cafes. A great place to stroll along at night and grab dinner.
Canada Place – the starting off point of most cruise ships, this architectural beauty also is surrounded by a shopping area, a hotel and an IMAX theater to entertain guests. Former location of the World’s Fair.
Gastown – Located not too far from Chinatown and the Lookout! at Harbour Centre Tower, it’s a great little shopping area in Vancouver. Gastown contains the first ever operating steam clock in the world.
If anyone else has any great Vancouver attractions, please feel free to add them here.
