Would it be too cold in the middle of May?

That depends on what you consider to be too cold.
We took a 14 night Alaska cruise started 5/3/08.
It was cool but not too cold. Mostly 50's.
We only had rain for part of 2 days, that was a plus.

We were able to get rather close to Hubbard Glacier, within 1 mile.

I think it would. And in the middle of June, July, and August, too!

Maybe I'm not the best one to answer this.
I think 75 is getting way down there... really uncomfortable.

You are talking about Alaska, right? Na, it will be cool but not really cold. Not much worse than Manitoba (now if you were from southern California, my thoughts might be different)

Actually, you can get lucky. In fact, it can get up into the 80s in Fairbanks during the summer. And the week before our Alaskan cruise, people were wearing shorts onboard (Seattle and Alaska were going thru a heat wave then).

The day before we left the Valley to go up north to catch our train to Seattle, it was close to 110 degrees. So being in the 60s was sweet for us.

Will it be warm enough to use the pools?

If you can go on the Island Princess, you can use the covered pool (same as on the Sapphire)

The Radiance and Serenade also have covered pools. We used the pool last month on the Serenade. They have hot tubs both inside and outside.

Yeah, I would say that it won't be warm enough for the outside pools, but plenty warm for the covered ones.

I was there for 14 days in May of 2006, and the weather was spectacular! High 60's & 70's. Wore shorts most of the time except when we got up at 6am to view College Fjord. That was really the only time I felt *cold* & needed the heavy jacket I'd brought. Wore a light jacket (see avatar) while viewing Marjorie glacier, but eventually was able to take it off. It would get nippy on deck in the evenings when we were actually cruising. But it was gorgeous on land!

We did an Alaskan cruise this past May -- 11th - 18th. The weather was terrible -- a lot of rain -- very chilly.

The outside pools were never used. The dome kept the other pool area warm.

Cruising is a wonderful way to enjoy retirement!!
    Stopped counting after 110 cruises.
