Binoculars

Hey Alaska cruisers!

I met someone yesterday who had just returned from a 14-day cruise to Alaska. He's also a stargazer and told me about the binoculars he brought with him: $75.00, Celestron SkyMaster 15x70. He said that he could see the 4 moons of Jupiter with them (which may mean something to those of you in the know...it didn't mean a lot to me). He said that they were the hit of the cruise.

Anyway, I learned the hard way that it's worth it to invest a bit in a good pair of binoculars, so I'm just passing this on for all of you lucky cruisers considering a purchase!

I agree, a good pair of binoculars can add an infinite amount of enjoyment to many cruises - especially the Alaska ones.

Doesn't HAL still give out basic binoculars on many of their Alaska cruises? Or is this only the case on specific group cruises (like my AAA ones?)

Seems like if there's a cruise calling out for binoculars, it's the Alaskan one. Of course, during the middle of summer, it's not dark til later. But during the daytime, still lots of views.

I took binoculars on my first Alaskan cruise and didn't use them. I had my zoom lens on my camera instead.

But, Heather, there is a big difference between a monocular on a camera and true binoculars.

Though we've not yet had the pleasure of cruising Alaska, we have taken binocs with us on a few cruises. We're always glad when we do.

They're especially handy if you are in a blacony cabin. Great for when you are approaching a port!

Once, we passed a tiny islind, seemingingly in the middle of nowhere. There were a couple of structures on it, but we couldn't quite make them out. Sadly, it was one of the times we'd left the 'nocs at home. Sure would have liked to have had them THAT time.

I can only imagine how useful they'd be on an Alaskan itinerary!

Question

Would someone please explain binocculars to me. How do I know what is a good pair for sightseeing and what is going to be blurry? Can anyone recommend a really good pair for Alaska sightseeing?
