I think 10x50 might be the max you want unless you are going to spend some real bucks and get some with image stabilization.

It is simply too hard to use anything with higher magnification without a monopod or some other help to keep from shaking too much.

You can pay hundreds or more for a good pair of binoculars, although if only using under good lighting and other factors, you can get by with much less.

20x? Pics say taken with a Canon S5 IS.

Just keep in mind that like most things in life, if you want quality, you have to pay for it. And if you want cheap, then that's what you'll get. So you have to decide whether quality or money is more important, whether it's binoculars, cameras, etc. The optics are what makes the biggest difference - cheap optics result in lower quality - same holds true for both.

I bought a cheap pair of binoculars a few years ago - they were compact and I thought they would be perfect for traveling. After taking them on a cruise, I realized how much I hated them - the optics were not clear and we could not keep both lenses in focus. Wasted my money.

Remember the old expression, "Penny-wise, pound foolish." Sometimes it pays to spend a bit more and get better quality - in the long run, it's usually worth it. And since this could possibly be your only trip to Alaska, why take the chance?
