Pirates hitting luxury liners.

What is next???? It is so scary to hear the news from those that were on the luxury cruise ship. It already seems security around ports are up. What is next? Coast Guard following the ships everywhere?

The main question so far not answered by either the captain direct or Carnival Corp is why the ship was 50 miles INSIDE the recommended distance off the Somalian coast. A 150 mile exclusion zone was instigated by the International Maritime Organisation in June 05 because there had been a severe increase of pirate activity in the area since March 05.

All mariners and maritime companies receive 'Notices to Mariners', Carnival would have received this one and so should the captain.

That is the biggest question in all this mess, why was that ship in that position in a known danger area?

It will be fascinating to hear the answer. That question has been raised many times in both the media and maritime circles.

No-one has said as yet that the Captain was on duty at the time, could easily been the First Officer. They are usually on bridge duty at night. It still doesn't answer the question as to why the ship was there, however.

The Captain did a damn good job to get out of a dangerous situation in one piece though, so for that he should be commended.

I hadn't read or heard the cruise line that was responsible. I didn't know it was Carnival. I would hope that the Captains take more notice of that rule of the area in the future. What a scare.

The actual ship was a Seabourn, which is one of many companies owned by Carnival Corporation. Others you will recognize are Princess, HAL and Cunard, but there are several others that do most of their business outside the US.

Thanks Jim. I didn't think I was totally oblivious. Sleep depravation and all you know.

I did refrain to ask Mikey what he was up to.
