It seems the only resolutions so far have been by the ships' owners paying large ransoms. Given the success, it doesn't seem likely that the siezures will cease any time soon...
NEW DELHI — The pirate "mother ship" sunk last week by the Indian navy was actually a Thai fishing trawler that had been commandeered hours earlier by pirates, an international maritime agency said Wednesday.
But the Indian navy defended its actions, saying it had fired in self-defense.
... one Thai crew member died when the Indian frigate INS Tabar fired on the boat in the Gulf of Aden on Nov. 18.
Fourteen others are missing and a Cambodian sailor was rescued four days later by passing fishmermen,
NAIROBI, Kenya - Somali pirates seized control of a chemical tanker in the Gulf of Aden on Friday and a NATO helicopter gunship, too late to prevent the hijacking, picked up three security guards who jumped into the sea.
Both France and Germany, which have ships in the area as part of an international anti-piracy coalition, sent the aircraft after receiving a distress call just after dawn, French military spokesman Cmdr. Christophe Prazuck said. But in the 15 minutes it took to get to the site, the pirates had already boarded and had taken the crew of 25 Indians and two Bangladeshis hostage.
The two British guards who leapt overboard with their Irish colleague were safe onboard a French warship,
IT HAS HAPPENED AGAIN Another attempted pirate attack on a cruise ship. This one was on an Oceania ship. The ship was able to outrun the pirates, who did fire on the ship.
Here, from Oceania Cruises, is their statement about the incident in which the Nautica was fired upon by pirates chasing the cruise ship in speedboars on Saturday:
STATEMENT ON ATTEMPTED ACT OF PIRACY
Miami, FL, November 30, 2008 – On November 30, 2008, at approximately 0928 local time, 0528 GMT, M/S NAUTICA was transiting through the Gulf of Aden within the prescribed Maritime Safety Protection Area which is patrolled by international anti-piracy task forces.
As the vessel sailed past several groups of non-hostile fishing vessels, two small skiffs were sighted by the Officer on Duty and deemed potentially hostile. The skiffs, approaching from a range of approximately 1000 meters, attempted to intercept the vessel’s course. Captain Jurica Brajcic and his officers immediately began evasive maneuvers and took all prescribed precautions. NAUTICA was immediately brought to flank speed and was able to out run the two skiffs. One of the skiffs did manage to close the range to approximately 300 yards and fired eight rifle shots in the direction of the vessel before trailing off. No one aboard NAUTICA was harmed and no damage was sustained.
All guests and crew onboard are safe and there were no injuries. All requisite international authorities have been notified and all anti-piracy precautions were in place prior to the event and all necessary measures were taken during the event.
