For us, if we're doing shore excursions, we usually aim for the ship's ones (the security factor). Also we may get a few of the photos, if we see ones we're happy with. Of course, tips and any extra tips. We may buy a few tee shirts for souvenirs, our traditional matching aloha wear if in Hawaii, nothing else will be very expensive. Hubby may get a few glasses of wine.
We usually skip the spa, casino, specialty restaurants.
I try to keep my DH out of the art galleries. And believe it or not, out of the jewelry stores. He thinks I always need more and I really don't. I mean after all, how many rings and necklaces can you wear doing housework?
And oh yeah, the casino. Those 20's sure can go fast if you aren't winning.
Hanna, I sure wish my husband went jewelry shopping for me. I would never keep him out of those stores. You can always alternate your rings and there is always ear rings, necklaces, and bracelets....which you can also alternate.
Can you really have too much of diamonds, rubies, gold, etc? If so I haven't reached that point yet! Probably because I have to buy it myself,

Our Lady Luck died of heavy drinking so no Casino and very little alcohol for us. We don't shop much except for a few souvenir or clothing items. We're at the stage of giving our stuff away and consider nearly everything junk. We spent mostly on ship's excursions for less stress and security. We prefer to give larger tips rather dropping it in the Casino black hole. I feel much better that way.
Shore excursions for us. We usually do wild and crazy things like helicopter rides, and they charge a bunch for stuff like that.
When we sail with an all inclusive cruise we don't have a huge bar bill because we don't have to buy wine at dinner. But when we sail mainstream cruiselines we sometimes have a bar bill that comes close to those shore excursion costs! (No, we don't drink that much, we share the wine with the table)

Plus I put shopping, but most of that goes in the bookshop. I have quite a collection of books about QE2, three signed by Captain McNaught and one written and signed by Captain Warwick.
I did treat myself to a rather nice watch on my last cruise. I just had to it was shouting "buy me" every time I walked past and saw it in the shop window.

Cruises booked: Queen Victoria November 2009, QM2 May 2010 and Queen Victoria March 2011.
I chose Shore Excursions because we spent over $2200.00 for our cruise coming up in June.
There's no way we'd ever spend that much in drinks, tips, or the others combined.
I might on shopping but then I would be homeless when he gets the credit card bill.

I can remember two earrings purchases that my hubby was better off not making. A pair of nice Mexican style earrings that were way too heavy for my ears, and a pair of stud ones he got in Ensenada for me that were obviously, from the color the metal turned after one use, way too cheap. He was trying to be nice, but I know now to watch him even when he says he buying something for someone else.
