Yes there are dungeons, which they take you in as part of the tour. When I went, they had to drop a section of the tour as one of the court rooms was in use, but we got to go into a dungeon, with no windows and no lights.
Yes it is very regal and sits high on a hill over looking the city of Lancaster.
The castle also has royal connections as HM The Queen is also Duke of Lancaster.
